Arbutus Technical Consulting
Publications
Arbutus Technical Consulting is proud to support collaborative efforts to advance good practice. The following selection of key publications resulting from these collaborations provide insight into our approach to systems engineering and systems safety engineering.
We co-chaired an INCOSE UK working group which was set up to advance good practice in systems engineering of systems that have entered service. The approach taken by the group is described in the following paper:
1.
Bruce Elliott and Glenn Panter, An Initiative to Strengthen Guidance on the Systems Engineering of Systems which are Already in Service: First Progress Report, INCOSE International Symposium, 2010, Chicago
(Read the report on systems engineering of systems that have entered service - PDF 690kbytes)
The working group produced the following report:
2.
INCOSE UK Chapter Working Group on Applying Systems Engineering to In-Service Systems, Supplementary Guidance to the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook, 2010

We also supported and continue to support the INCOSE Transportation Working Group, an international working group. Jargon keeps coming up as an obstacle to importing systems engineering ideas into the transportation sector and the following paper describes an initiative to overcome that obstacle:
3.
Tim Armitage, Deborah Chin, Bruce Elliott, Ed Kastenhuber and Michael E Krueger, Getting the Message Across - Creating Accessible Guides to Promote the Adoption of Systems Engineering Good Practices, INCOSE International Symposium, 2008, Albuquerque

Overcoming obstacles to importing systems engineering ideas into the transportation sector is important to us. Some early work that Bruce Elliott carried out in this area, before Arbutus Technical Consulting was formed, is described in the following article:
4.
Bruce Elliott and Ambrose Langley-Poole, Delivering railway projects using systems engineering, APM Yearbook 2004/05

The following article in Railway Gazette International is a more recent contribution to the same aim:
5.
Bruce Elliott, Clive Roberts, Felix Schmid and Ian Shannon, The seven myths of railway systems engineering, Railway Gazette International, September 2012

Bruce Elliott has supported the development of the Yellow Book throughout its lifetime. Another magazine article provides an easy introduction to the Yellow Book:
